Club Meeting: "Trees: A Precious Resource -- How to Plant and Care for Them"

Please join the University Park Woman’s Club as we welcome two guest speakers, Chris Aubry and Rachel Lamb, on Monday, April 4. The topic will be “Trees: A Precious Resource -- How to Plant and Care for Them.” The meeting will be in-person at University Christian Church beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Chris Aubry has served as the Chair of University Park’s Committee on Trees, Parks, and Environment for ten years. He and his committee are the voice of advocacy for the town’s “silent citizens,” the thousands of trees which enrich our lives --  financially, physically, and emotionally. He will share his thoughts on University Park’s tree canopy and talk about why he believes it is a shared resource owned by all, for which we have a moral imperative to nurture and safeguard.

Chris grew up in the small hamlet of Walnut Valley, NJ, where most land was either forested or used to support dairy cattle. His fascination and respect for trees has endured his entire life. For seven years he earned his living as a tree surgeon in the urban forests of Central New Jersey as sole proprietor of Poet Tree Service, where he distinguished himself by persuading many of his would-be customers not to cut down their trees. He will share insights on how to take care of trees in our yards and forests.

Rachel Lamb is a Maryland Sea Grant State Science Policy Fellow in the Maryland Department of Environment's Climate Change Program. Rachel supports carbon assessments and accounting for Maryland's natural and working lands. She also works to advance supportive policy for strategic carbon sequestration activities relative to the state's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act and broader participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Rachel earned her PhD in Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) where her research centered on the applications of NASA Carbon Monitoring System science to advance strategic reforestation with co-benefits for biodiversity and human livelihoods.

Rachel will speak about the State's new 5 million trees initiative and opportunities for tree planting at the local level.
